Prior to becoming the Royal Road or Camino Real during the Colonial period, the route was used by Native tribes. Those whose homeland anchored this route within what is now the southern edge of the United States were called the Manso Indians. In the video below, Manso descendant, Cruz Camargo, discusses the trails that were once used by his ancestors and the role of these trails in social gatherings.
